TOMS - love the cause, but I always thought the shoes were ugly until I saw...

ELEPHANT TOMS! Will be purchasing over spring break and wearing all.the.time. my only concern is that they're white and will get dirty. As Stuff White People Like says "Every time you buy a pair of these canvas shoes they donate a pair to a child in need in the third world. Of course, instead of buying a pair of shoes, a white person could just donate the money they were going to use on shoes to the TOMS charity and let two people in the third world get new shoes. But that’s not a realistic possibility, not with summer right around the corner."

Note: I arrived home from school (and from Maine where I was visiting friends) to find a pair, size 6.5., on my bed. Thanks, Mom!!)

This is just cute...

Le Petit Prince

"on ne voit bien qu'avec le cœur. L'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux."
...
"one sees clearly only with the heart. The essential is invisible to the eyes." - Le Petit Prince

{via Scholastic)

I recently reread The Little Prince and I realized that I had forgotten what a wonderful book it is. You can read what is purportedly a children's book in under an hour, and it is full of amazing quotes and sentiments. Take a break to read this and it will be the best hour of your day!

I truly feel as though I have grown up in the year and a half I've been in college more than in any other time in my life. Adults always seemed to know everything, but now that I'm growing up, I realize adults only had the answers when everything was simple. Maybe children see reality better than anyone, because their reality hasn't been clouded by the half-truths and shades of gray of adulthood; this is a major theme in The Little Prince that got me thinking.

"Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them" - The Little Prince

"Later that day I got to thinking about relationships"

"
"...But the most exciting, challenging and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself. And if you can find someone to love the you you love, well, that's just fabulous." -Carrie Bradshaw

I've been thinking lately, that the best moral compass and the best measure of happiness is the quality of your relationship with yourself.

Some things are clearly wrong, but for the grayer day-to-day decisions, I always think "if I do this, will I be as comfortable with myself after?" When I'm alone in my head will I still like myself as much as I do now? Sometimes, you do something that goes against this, and makes you question who you are. The wonderful thing, though, is that unlike other relationships, the relationship with yourself will always be there, so no matter how damaged it becomes, you can always fix it.

Other people may be smarter, wealthier, prettier, but if I wake up every day only wanting to be myself, then that's a happy life :)

Go Greek Lightning; I love that I'm an Alpha Chi (Greek lightning! Go Greek lightning!)

It's not a New Year's resolution if it's not broken within the first month, so apologies for my lack of posting.

Recruitment and classes are now in full swing, and this week promises to be exhausting. I have more hours of class today than I had sleep last night, but I am surprisingly wide awake and powering through! My first class and first professor both seem really great!

Recruitment has been such a good time of meeting potential future sisters, bonding with my sisters, and making our house look amazing!!

In our philanthropy round we "shopped out" domestic violence by donating clothes to battered women in need. I love that our round is more than just making crafts that will be thrown away at the end of the day.

I was up late last night blacking out the entire inside of the AXO house and putting up decorations for our Grease themed entertainment round complete with root beer floats, dances, skits, and the songs from Grease rewritten with lyrics about Alpha Chi. So catchy!

out with the old & in with the new

2010 was a complicated year for me. I feel like I really grew up in 2010. There were a lot of tears, but like rainbows follow rain, there were a lot of smiles too. I had many new experiences, and while some were mistakes or made me sad, they were all formative and I'm glad for that.

My 2011 resolutions: none. No resolutions, no regrets. I try to be the best version of myself each day, but often I'm not; I make mistakes. Nevertheless, I don't need one day to make myself feel good about reinventing myself - it's a constant process. Writing things down won't make them happen. The only thing there is is to just do.

That being said, I do have a few 2011 blogolutions (If Sarah Palin can coin a word, so can I)
1. Blog twice a week at a MINIMUM. Even if it's just a picture or a quote, I should blog frequently and regularly.
2. Get more personal, to some extent.
3. Have some short posts more frequently with quotes I like, pretty pictures, or funny videos.
4. Start a new blog that focuses on politics and policy. I have a few here and there in this blog, but they don't fit with the rest of the post. If this is something I'm passionate about, it deserves my focus.

Hope you're doing something wonderful tonight!
